Tobago - Getting Married in Tobago

I am not a wedding organiser, but can offer you as much advise as possible and put you in contact with people to whom you need to speak. Networking is very much part of Tobago life.

The most important thing to bear in mind is both parties must have been in Tobago at least three days prior to the date of the intended marriage - the day of arrival is not counted in that three-day period.

Tobago is an island for those who want to get away from it all. The newly married couple will find romantic beaches, wonderful views, sunrises and sunsets, spectacular scenery for those snapshots to take home, and much, much, more.

You must leave for your wedding with the following information:

  • Proof of Residence (passport and airline tickets).
  • Identification (passport or new driving licence).
  • If divorced, you will need the original or notarised copy of your degree absolute.
  • If widowed, you will need the original death certificate of spouse.
  • Deed poll, or other proof, of any name change that differs from documents.
  • If under 18 years of age, written consent of the parent or guardian is essential.
  • Marriage Licence.

The marriage licence can be applied for in 2 locations:

Registrar General Office
Jernningham Street
Scarborough
Tel: 001 868 639 3210

Inland Revenue
Sangster’s Hill
Scarborough
Tel: 001 868 639 2410

The Licence costs TT$337.50 (about £30). This can be paid in cash. (Special licence TT$300 and two certificates TT$37.50)
A certified marriage officer can perform marriages on any day between 6am and 6pm.

All marriages are considered civil except for Hindu, Muslim or Orisha ceremonies, which have additional requirements.

Other points to consider:

  • It is a good idea to travel with your wedding dress in your hand luggage.
  • Remember when buying your dress, it will be hot in Tobago.
  • The groom also wants lightweight clothing.
  • Hang up your dress in your accommodation as soon as you arrive and creases will have time to fall out.
  • Insect repellent and sun tan cream. If you are standing out in the open with the sun beating down then you will certainly need these.
  • Tobagonians love a wedding and you will get local interest if you are in a public place.
  • If you require a photographer/videographer, they are available, but seek advice (you only get one stab at pictures).
  • The best time to have the wedding is in the late afternoon when it is cooler and the sun is not directly overhead. The photographs can then include the setting sun.
