Lookout Villa - Englishman's Bay, Tobago

Bedrooms: 3 Pool: No
Guests: 6 Prices

The Lookout stands in a rainforest clearing and boasts spectacular views of the valley leading to Englishman’s Bay with its well-deserved international reputation. Here, golden sands and palm trees fringe the warm Caribbean Sea, and the sounds of the waves hitting the rocks and the beach transmit up the valley to the house.

The Lookout is situated in 1 acre of rainforest. Access is by dirt track, a 4x4 is necessary, particularly in the wet season. The land falls steeply away in front of the veranda, and whilst relaxing there you will see all manner of bird life, including flocks of parrots flying overhead, humming birds and large hawks, the beautiful blue crowned Mot-Mot as well as the national bird of Tobago - the Cocrico. If you are a bird watcher, you will be very happy. If you are not a bird watcher, you soon will be!

The Lookout is a large, single story holiday villa, built in traditional style of wood. It offers highly comfortable holiday accommodation for up to 6 people. Due to its high ceilings and fans, it remains cool inside without the need for air conditioning.

To the west of the house we have planted an area with fruiting trees, including bananas, mango, lime and coconut. There are also several pineapple plants next to the veranda. Feel free to pick anything that is ripe!

The Lookout is an excellent base from which to explore the rainforest jungles and the surrounding villages. There is superb snorkelling in Englishman’s Bay, and the neighbouring Castara Bay. Castara Village also houses several good restaurants, from basic to more upmarket restaurant. Further away are the protected rainforest, and villages of Speyside and Charlotteville. Scuba diving is possible round most of the island, although you will have to travel to the dive schools.

The Lookout accommodation consists of:

  • Dining Area
  • Double bedroom with ensuite facilities
  • 2 Twin bedrooms each with ensuite facilities
  • Large open plan lounge and dining area
  • Well equipped kitchen with breakfast bar
  • Utility room with washing machine/tumble drier.
  • Verandah & outdoor furniture including barbecue

The Lookout has been designed by a local architect, and the intention has been to build in traditional style, and provide cool accommodation without the need for windows and air conditioning. This has been achieved using high ceilings and an innovative tower over the kitchen which allows hot air to rise out, and draw cooler air in to the villa. There is no glass in the house. Instead, metal shutters act as curtains, and provide security, and there is a mesh opening sash on each window. This allows views out and breeze in, but prevents flying insects coming in.

The bedrooms are equipped with mosquito nets should you wish to use them, but we have found that plug in bug-mats are sufficient. Each room has plenty of electrical points.

The lounge area has a 3-piece suite, TV & DVD/video but there is very poor TV reception. A CD player/radio is also available. There is a large library of books – please feel free to read them. If you haven’t finished by the end of your stay, you can take the book with you – but please leave one in its place! There is also a selection of games, in case you get bored with all the wildlife.

The kitchen is fully equipped with cooker, fridge-freezer, toaster, microwave and food processor with blender, as well as kettle. There is ample cupboard & drawer space, containing crockery & cutlery for up to 6 people.

Beyond the kitchen is a utility room containing a washing machine and tumble drier, iron & ironing board. The water supply is rainwater, collected during the rainy season, and stored in large tanks down the hill from the house. Drinking water is from a filtered tap at the sink in the washroom.

There is a guest toilet just opposite the utility room, and along the corridor is a cupboard containing brushes, vacuum cleaner and the barbeque.

Outside, the veranda has a teak dining suite and a couple of teak easy chairs. There is built in seating at the sides of the rail. Steps to one side lead to the barbeque stand, and to the other side lead to the pineapple patch, and the terraced paths to allow access to the lower areas of the grounds. Here, as mentioned above, we have planted fruit trees including lime, orange, mango and bananas. We have also planted some sugar cane, and avocado, as well as some less well known fruits – shaddock and kaimart. As the area used to be part of a cocoa plantation, there are several cocoa trees around the house. Paw-paw trees occur here naturally, and the fruit is good.
